Mark Cole was also present and discussed how important networking was as did most of the guests. However, Mark made a really important point of breaking down the different ways to network and how to make good impressions when approaching someone established in the field. He said that when e-mailing someone who works for a company or show to give them an opinion on their work and why you would want to work with them which makes a difference to just giving in a CV and to do research on who the contact is and if they are in the correct position to give you the job you are after. He also said to think outside of the more common sports and give others a go.
What is “Good” Journalism?
Journalism is informative and accurate.
The first priority for a journalist is to tell the truth. Journalism can also take many forms. When investigating a story it is necessary that a journalist finds reliable sources for their stories and ensures that these stories are accurate as well as interesting. Trying to make a story more interesting by sensationalising or telling anything other than the truth makes it worse not better and could cause legal issues for the journalist. Articles in newspapers are a familiar format but journalism is also changing as technology and social media progresses. Many journalists use their social media platforms to interact with people and broadcast their work. Many journalists use a website to promote content and journalism can also take the form of videos. These videos can be long and in depth like BBC’s “Gerraint Thomas: The Road Will Decide”. This is a good example of a reliable primary source as the most reliable source is the sports person themselves in this case. In the interviews featured in this documentary there is also obvious evidence of good interview technique and it produced a higher standard of work. The interviewees were relaxed and gave the necessary information that made the documentary informative and interesting. It is also possible to make a very short video edited on an app like Mojo. Using these apps you can create short clips with images, providing they are in fair use, with annotations. These are good for quick updates on social media. Any video made also takes editing and time to film. Deciding what angle and setting to use are important for a video piece and if some of it isn’t set at an event then the setting has to come into consideration. Photography is also another important medium a sports journalist has to tell a story and more journalists are becoming skilled in multiple areas to produce a more complete piece of work. Normally an article on a website or in a paper will be accompanied by an image or video and being able to do both writing and produce the images are great skills to have.
